The Department of Biotechnology was founded in 2005 with a vision to be recognized as a Department of International repute with a strong interdisciplinary research and teaching base in biological sciences and engineering and an active collaboration with industries and health-care institutions. The department is located at Gayatri Vidya Parishad college for degree and PG coursea (A) MVP Campus Visakhapatnam. Currently, the department has 2 faculty members, about 173 under graduate students and lab assistants.
Our academic programmes are designed with a systematic and flexible structure. Students are well-equipped with fundamental knowledge and have acquired up-to-date practical experience when they are ready to graduate. Ample of our graduates now occupy senior positions in the industry like WIPRO, REDDY LABS, AUROBINDO PHARMA,BIOCON,ACCENTURE, etc. and some are pursuing their higher studies abroad like the USA, CANADA, GERMANY, IRELAND, POLAND, etc and all of our students are into the community service. They are part of a well-recognized group of people making significant contributions to the growth and development of our country.
Conceptually,Biotechnology should be comprehended as a sociotechnical system: a complex and interacting set of elements that includes both technical (Invitro fertilization, gene sequencing machines etc.) and social things (laws, institutions, science fiction movies etc.). This concept suggests that the outcomes of science and technology are always coproduced by social and technical circumstance, for instance, we cannot understand stem cells, Cancer cells, embryos or climate change without paying attention to both technical and social circumstances at the same time. To put this concept into force, higher education especially biotechnology is being integrated with many disciplines of human welfare. In concern with the above concept, Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India has immensely inspired the Biotechnology research and development activities through several research and development projects, demonstrations, grants and creation of infrastructural facilities, as result a clear visible impact of this field has been seen in the development profile of our country in the fields of human genome, vaccines, infectious, chronic and degenerative diseases, cell science, crop science, animal and plant biotechnology, agriculture and aqua culture, food and nutrition, environmental management and technologies for clean energy etc.
These are exciting and challenging times for Biotechnologists. Modern biotechnology, finds applications in a variety of domains such as in the manufacture of high-technology pharmaceuticals as well as in the making of enzymes for the detergents we use for washing our clothes. With expanding knowledge of the cell and its functioning at the molecular level, biotechnologists are now seeking answers to prevent life threatening diseases, to meet the energy and food requirements of ever-growing population and also to solve the environmental problems that threaten our very existence on this planet.
